Tuesday Evening Running Squad at Monash Clayton

Update – Wednesday 19th January  2011

 Hi All

Great conditions last Tuesday night - and the attendance of 30 was a few up on last week.

Lots of apologies again last night – for an incredible range of reasons/ excuses. But thanks to all of you who did take the trouble to let me know of your inability to attend

Last night we visited our hill circuit – around the lake  – for 15 minutes of hill efforts. Although quite tough – this appears to be one of our more popular sessions.

We welcomed 1 new member– George Symeou.

After having the pleasure fairly recently of welcoming our 3 squad members from Iran, I found out last night that one of our members is from Reunion Island - in the Indian Ocean – as far as I know the first time I’ve met someone from that country. What a great cross section of countries are represented in our squad !

Congrats to squad memnber Laurent Juglair who improved his 'PB' fopr 1500m by over 8 seconds at the Nunawading track on Tuesday evening (Milers Club Meet)

We will be in action again as usual next Tuesday evening 25th January 2011, and as usual we'll meet at 6.00pm for a 6.05pm sharp start

·         We’re still located at the Baseball field, & using the pavilion over there. Access by car is quite good & parking is very handy - enter from Ring Road East & go around to the Baseball field along the road  around the back (Wellington Rd end) of Oval 1.

·        And we’ll be in action every Tuesday evening without fail throughout 2011

Saturday Morning Hill Session at Jells Park

Our  Hill session WILL go ahead again this coming Saturday morning (22nd January) - at Jells Park, and I’ll be there for sure. We’ll meet as usual  at 8.30am SHARP out the front of the cafe – ‘Madelines’. Enter Jells Park from the entrance in Waverley Rd extension – opposite the Glen Waverley Golf Course.

Don’t hesitate to join us if you feel inclined – we cater for all.

A few recent results for our squad members are included – as well as a couple of new photos. If attendance is OK at Jells Park this Saturday I may take a few shots for the site

As we’re keen to keep the site current, please send me or Leanne ( leanne@dyksterhuis.com )details of any runs or other items of interest.

For your Diary

Very early – but important.

For the second year Monash Sport, Clayton – and our squad,  will be hosting the ‘Emer Casey Fun Run’ – on Sunday 21 May, at the Clayton Campus.

There will be 2 events – a 5k run/walk as well as a 10k.

Last year over $20,000 was raised from the Run at Monash for the Emer Casey Foundation – and was directed to Melbourne’s Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.

The Emer Casey Foundation is dedicated to providing funding to the DISOVARY consortium to secure the best independent research to detect the early signs of Uterine/Ovarian cancer. Following Emer's death in June 2006 the Casey family promised they would do all they could to help this research in the hope of securing a future of early detection. The Emer Casey Foundation is currently sponsoring three Phd Fellowship students, whose focus is in the areas of chemoresistance, cancer stem cells, circulating tumour cells and the body's immune response to cancer. The scientists have already identified a panel of proteins that can be identified in the blood of ovarian cancer patients. They have developed a near patient testing device to assess a patient's response to chemotherapy and are currently working on new ways to isolate circulating tumour cells in a patient's blood.

More details as they become available.
