This week – Tuesday 8th October 2013

posted 8 Oct 2013, 22:53 by Monash Running
Hi All

Our first Tuesday evening in the ‘daylight saving’ period was sensational – what great weather we have in Melbourne !

And huge numbers, no records but very close, with a turnout of 84 of us.

No need for lights, pretty well mown grass, & no wind etc made it perfect for our popular session of (approx) 200m efforts followed by a shortish jog/float recovery – for 16 minutes. Congratulations to each & every one of you for giving it your ‘best shot’

And lots even managed the full 15 minutes warm up & warm down – good to see.

We had 7 more new members join us this week – Brian He, Sven Svalbe, Tess Flottmann, Matilde Mazzotti, Linh Ngo, Rami Shami, & Cameron Bott.

We welcome all of you to our great squad and hope you enjoyed the experience.

Making a comeback after absences (long & not so long) were – Tim Fagan, Sonia O’Sullivan, & Frisca. And I neglected to welcome Ji Homman back last week.

Having an athlete of the calibre of Sonia involved with our squad is an incredible bonus for us, and Sonia is keen to meet all of you – and to give advice/help if asked.

· In recent weeks we have welcomed lots of new potential squad members to Run Monash. If you are one of these – but have not returned since your first night please let me know by return email if you will be back. I really can’t keep people on the mailing list who don’t intend to participate with us on a regular basis.

Thanks again to those who can’t attend who send me an ‘apology’ – as I’ve said this demonstrates more than just a casual involvement in our ‘Run Monash’ squad.

Would you all please make a special effort to mark off/highlight your name on my attendance list each week as that’s the only way I have of keeping track of attendance numbers.

Monash Tuesday Night Running Group Facebook

This is the link to the Running Group Facebook page;

If you “Like” this page then you will be part of the group, you can also add friends to this page who might like the group.

We will continue to put up messages, pictures and video for everyone to see on this page and if you have liked us you’ll be notified.

** Amy Pollock-Hall is our facebook guru – however, sadly, we will soon be losing Amy & our loss will be Sydney’s gain. So we are looking for one of you to take over the management of our group Facebook please.

Anyone interested please let me or Amy know. It’s an enjoyable task - & takes very little time or effort – but is greatly appreciated by all in Run Monash.

Saturday Morning Hill Session at Jells Park

Our usual weekly Hill session will be on Saturday next, 12th October 2013, at Jells Park & I’ll be there.
We’ll meet at the usual spot, ready to run, at 8.30am SHARP (please try to be on time) - out the front of the cafe – ‘Madeline’s’. Enter Jells Park from the entrance in Waverley Rd extension – opposite the Glen Waverley Golf Course.

Great turnout again for last Saturday’s Hill session (Sat 5th) on a day when I thought numbers might be down.

Hope to see lots of you next Saturday morning - don’t hesitate to ask me if any questions.

· Best wishes to our Run Monash squad member Sam Dwyer who is participating in the Hawaiian Ironman event this coming weekend

· With the Melbourne Marathon & supporting races on this coming Sunday I wish you all good luck in your final preparations. Look for me at the drink station at the 7k point in the marathon as you fly by.

· Geoff Watt Memorial Fun Run – 27th October 2013 – at Warragul

2.5k, 5k, 10k, Half Marathon events

Geoff Watt was a good friend of mine who, very sadly, died of exposure when out running in the mountains (Mt Erica) many years ago – Geoff was the father of Olympic Road Race (cycling) Gold Medallist Kathy Watt

I strongly urge Run Monash members to seriously consider participating in one of the events – I can provide information, but some details are here;

As usual we will be in action on Tuesday evening next week, 15th October – ready to - run at 6pm SHARP

In 2013, as usual, we’re located at the Baseball field, & using the pavilion over there. Access by car is quite good & parking is very handy - enter from Ring Road East & go around to the Baseball field along the road around the back (Wellington Rd end) of Oval 1. You can park at the rear of the pavilion if space – or on the dirt road above if you like

Time Trials – 2kms

We’re planning the next Time Trial for Tuesday evening November 26th – so a little under 7 weeks for all of you to get in a good preparation & chalk up a big improvement on your current best time for this most popular run.

· Time trial Number 4 Results are here ;

If you are looking to mix up your current exercise program or take your fitness to the next level, ENERGISE is the Small Group Training program for you. Small Group Training sessions start up many times throughout the year, with each program running twice a week over six weeks.

Running Group Waiver Form – A message from Monash Sport.

All participants of the Running Group are required by the University to complete a waiver form. This form has a number of purposes. It firstly acts as a waiver to advise participants of the potential risks involved in the activity. It will also provide Monash Sport with valuable statistics in regards to who (student/staff/alumni/community) is participating in this activity. The University is requesting information on who is participating in all of Monash Sport's programs so this will assist Monash Sport in their reporting back to the University about student, staff and alumni usage. The form also provides an emergency contact point should anything happen. Hopefully we never need to use this information though!

If you haven't completed a form already, please click on the link below to download a form, complete it and bring it to the next session and give it to me /TV.

I will have spare blank forms with me of a Tuesday evening. Thanks to the great many of you who have completed & returned forms to me already.

Our Mailing List

If you are still on our mailing list – but no longer interested or involved in the Running Squad – please let me know by return email so I can remove you from our circulation.
