More about our members

Recently, all members were asked to participate in a running club survey.  Each week, we'll share a few interesting facts about each member to help you get to know each other a little better.  Later in the year, we'll tally all of the results and let you know what the most common responses were.

3. A brief background

I’m in my 3rd year of medical school at Monash. I love basketball and running, and been running a lot more since coming here.

4. How long have you been a RunMonash member?
April 2012

5. Favourite run session? 200s!

6. Favourite place to run?
Love running along the Gardiner’s creek trail, or anytime I get to run on a new route.

7. Favourite song/music to run to? (or sounds of nature)
Sounds of nature and the singing that goes on in my head throughout the run. Always too lazy to carry around an ipod.

8. Favourite food?
Definitely hawker centre food from home (Singapore), and desserts!! I love dessert too.

9. What motivates you to continue running?
To keep fit! And the adrenaline rush I get after every running session.

10. What is your running goal for 2014?
I aimed to do a15k and a half marathon this year, but I think I I’ll have to leave the half marathon for next year.

11. Any general comments about your involvement in RunMonash.
I’m glad my friend, Isaac, introduced me to this running group. It’s much more fun running with others, to give myself a bit of competition and motivation during the run. I would definitely not be able to do interval training on my own. Trevor’s passion for running is also a great inspiration!

1.     Name: Andrew van Agtmaal

2.     Age: 23

3.     A brief background
I'm a fifth year sci / eng student. Started running regularly around 2012 during a year off playing sport regularly to keep up my fitness.

4.     How long have you been a RunMonash member?
A bit over a year now.

5.     Favourite run session?
The Saturday hills session or the lake.

6.     Favourite place to run?
I would have said Wuchatsch reserve near my home town of Nyora until recently, but probably Ferny Creek now, a beautiful, fantastic (and challenging) place to run!

7.     Favourite song/music to run to? (or sounds of nature)
Definitely the sound of nature, but occasionally if I'm running near traffic, I'll pop in the earphones.

8.     Favourite food?
Anything Thai / risotto / dumplings related. If it's after a run, my favourite reduces to the nearest source of food.

9.     What motivates you to continue running?
Keeping fit, and it's a great way to start or end the day! Trying to outrun my brother is also a pretty good motivation as well, I'll admit.

10.  What is your running goal for 2014?
Didn't really have a specific goal coming into the year besides to run regularly, but after doing a lot more running and enjoying it, it is now to run a half marathon at a decent pace.

11.  Any general comments about your involvement in RunMonash.
Wish I had joined years ago, fantastic group. Thanks Trevor for all the work you put in!

Member of the Week: Alasdair Wood

posted 22 Sep 2014, 04:14 by Michelle Furniss

1. Name: Alasdair Wood

2. Age: 29

3. A brief background
I came over about a year ago from the UK to start work at ARMI. My main sporting interest in the UK was mountain biking but since coming over I have really picked up the running.

4. How long have you been a Run Monash member?
About a year now.

5. Favourite run session?
Mona Fartlek it gives you a bit of everything and is nicely challenging.

6. Favourite place to run?
The more remote the better really, having said that the best run I did this year was running through the Barossa as the sun was rising. I scared a few kangaroo’s who were hiding amongst the vines, which is still pretty much a novelty being a Brit.

7. Favourite song/music to run to? (or sounds of nature)
I do not listen to an ipod when I run but love it when there is a live band playing when you get to the end of a tough run, Salomon had a good band last weekend they were rocking a few classic ska numbers out.

8. Favourite food?
Steak with salad in the hot months but got to admit pizza is my guilty pleasure

9. What motivates you to continue running?
Like a lot of people I need a challenge to keep me engaged, I am currently looking at the six foot track marathon.

10. What is your running goal for 2014?
My initial goal was to complete the North Face 50km in the Blue mountains, now I am looking to do the six foot track marathon but maintaining a good pace across the entire course.

11. Any general comments about your involvement in RunMonash.
Been a pretty good year, never would of thought I would be running on those 40+ days. Would be great if there was an ice cream contingency plan on such days, just putting it out there.

Great club thanks for all the coaching and work in the background.

BBQ pork!

Eating lots of junk food and ice cream! I run to eat!

10. What is your running goal for 2014?
Hit below 20mins for 5km!

11. Any general comments about your involvement in RunMonash.
Running with runmonash really pushes and motivates me to put in effort in those intervals. My only regret is not joining the club earlier! It is definitely worth the 40mins drive to and from clayton every Tuesday!

Member of the week: Paulina Mikulic

posted 10 Sep 2014, 23:35 by Michelle Furniss

1. Name: Paulina Mikulic

2. Age: 31

3. A brief background: PhD student, Faculty of Science (Biology)

4. How long have you been a RunMonash member?
Hmm…I really can’t remember! I think I joined in 2012 to prepare for my first 10km race at the Melbourne Marathon Fesitval. So that’s two years now!
I had been running on my own for years up until I signed up for that race, and had been meaning to join RunMonash for ages. I realised that if I wanted to run a decent time, I would need motivation, new challenges and interval training.

5. Favourite run session?
I like quite a few actually.
I like how the Hills session at Jells park challenges me.
I also like the Mona Fartlek session, again because it challenges me.
I like the 200’s too….I can’t choose, and please don’t force me to!

6. Favourite place to run?
I like running at Jells Park. I also enjoy a run along the beach track. There are not many hills there though, but there are sounds and smells of the beach.

7. Favourite song/music to run to? (or sounds of nature)
I usually run with people so I don’t listen to music too often, but when I do on occasion run with earphones, I listen to all sorts of music.

8. Favourite food?
I like chicken salads, nice gourmet sandwiches and dark chocolate (the mint flavoured Lindt one).

9. What motivates you to continue running?
I like feeling fit and healthy. When I do not run, I feel groggy and sad. Running makes me feel happy after a long day in the lab. Running with friends also makes me smile!

10. What is your running goal for 2014?
2014 has been a stressful year for me, with my PhD deadline looming. My aim is to therefore be as consistent with my training as possible. TV has been wonderful in helping me achieve this. With his motivation, I joined Glenhuntly Athletics Club and have been running in races, so I aim to do my best in those challenges.

11. Any general comments about your involvement in RunMonash.
Running with the support and motivation of Trevor Vincent, who is so passionate about the sport, and your health and fitness, has been a privilege and I would like to thank him for all the time he devotes to the 100+ members of our running club!

4. How long have you been a RunMonash member?
3 years now. It’s nice to still be able come to Monash around a working life!

5. Favourite run session?
The hills session we do. It’s good to see a physical marker in front of you to run faster rather than a timer!

6. Favourite place to run?
I’ve run up Mt Wellington near Hobart a few times. The scenery is always changing and the views are incredible.

7. Favourite song/music to run to? (or sounds of nature)
Drum n’ Bass or any music that matches the rhythm of my fet.

8. Favourite food?
Curry, curry and more curry!

9. What motivates you to continue running?
Finding new routes to run and getting some time out from the rest of the world.

10. What is your running goal for 2014?
Beating 90 minutes in a half marathon!

11. Any general comments about your involvement in RunMonash.
It’s been great to see how much the club has grown over the last few years. I can remember when it was only a handful of people in the middle of winter, but now we’re reaching the 3 figure mark. It’s good to know so many people share a common interest and do this weekly!

4. How long have you been a RunMonash member? 3.5 years

5. Favourite run session?
Saturday morning hills session is my all time favourite. It gives your running strength and develops your reflexes on the sharp downhill. I always run well after consistent hills training.

6. Favourite place to run?
Ferny creek. It's so beautiful up there and I get to spend 90 mins with my best friends. Important to mention the all important coffee and breakie afterwards with TV

7. Favourite song/music to run to? (or sounds of nature)
I stopped listening to music when I started racing and now I would never go back....sounds of nature is all I need.

8. Favourite food? Cereal

9. What motivates you to continue running?
I want to see how far my body can be pushed and when I think I'm at that limit how much further I can push it :)
I want to succeed in running like I have in softball and make it to that elite level and see success there.

10. What is your running goal for 2014?
To cement my spot in the Glenhuntly Division 1 team and to consistently run 70+Km per week.

11. Any general comments about your involvement in RunMonash.
Running has changed my life in many ways, I have gained lifelong friends and skills I'll never lose. We are so lucky to have people like TV and Len who give their time for free to coach this group all for the love of this great sport. And how it's grown, I can remember coming along on Tuesday night and we would be lucky to crack 20 people.
Personally I would like to thanks TV for all his involvement in my running career thus far..."more to come" as he would say :)

Happy Running Everyone

3. A brief background
I’m from Melbourne, and in my final year of studying medicine at Monash. I’ve been running since I was eight with school and Little Aths, but I started with RunMonash when I came to Monash Uni. I also run for Glenhuntly Athletics which is how I originally met TV and found out about RunMonash.

4. How long have you been a RunMonash member?
Four years-I surprised myself with how long it’s been when I worked it out!

5. Favourite run session?
The Lake Circuit and of course the Saturday morning hill session at Jells Park.

6. Favourite place to run?
I like the bushy trails at Jells Park, but also running along the Gardener’s Creek Bike Path from Tooronga towards the city.

7. Favourite song/music to run to? (or sounds of nature)
I’ve only tried running with an iPod once and I decided I definitely prefer the sounds of nature!

8. Favourite food?
Lots, but spaghetti Bolognese and brie cheese are definitely up there.

9. What motivates you to continue running?
It’s really addictive, especially racing! Also, the fantastic group atmosphere at training always makes the sessions fun and motivates me to come even when I’m running late and have already missed half the session!

10. What is your running goal for 2014?
To get close to my track PB’s again over summer.

11. Any general comments about your involvement in RunMonash.
I think the great atmosphere of the group is a reflection of Trevor’s amazing enthusiasm for running and encouragement of all of us. So thanks TV for being there every week to organise the sessions and cheer us on!

Member of the Week: Simon Bowly

posted 7 Aug 2014, 22:51 by Michelle Furniss

1. Name Simon Bowly

2. Age 24

3. A brief background
I’ve been running on and off since high school, but really got into it in a big way since joining RunMonash and subsequently Glenhuntly Aths.  I graduated from Monash last year (studied engineering & science), so am no longer a Monash local but try to make it to the Tuesday night runs as often as I can.

4. How long have you been a RunMonash member?
Nearly four years now I think... it’s grown a lot since I first started!

5. Favourite run session?
I’ve always been a fan of the Mona session, it’s got a bit of everything.  And it’s on the grass rather than that pesky lake circuit...

6. Favourite place to run?
Ferny creek is hard to beat, particularly if you’re there early enough to scare some wallabies & lyre birds.

7. Favourite song/music to run to? (or sounds of nature)
Nature, although it would be nice to drown out the traffic noise for a change...

8. Favourite food?
Pasta with anything

9. What motivates you to continue running?
Apart from really enjoying it, it’s a great challenge to keep up regular training.  Seeing my results improve and feeling stronger motivates me to keep pushing along.

10. What is your running goal for 2014?
Run 100km per week without falling apart!

11. Any general comments about your involvement in RunMonash.
This is such a great group, it’s amazing in particular that we have so much variety in levels & motivations for running, yet we can all run together. And we’re incredibly lucky to have our “old hands” like TV, Len, Peter & Chris not only for organising our runs every week, but for the all the experience and enthusiasm they pass on.
